Ai Weiwei, the high-profile Chinese artist, has been released on bail by police in Beijing because he suffers from “chronic disease,” state media said Wednesday. The outspoken activist, who has diabetes, was detained in April during the Chinese government's biggest crackdown on activists in years. The 54-year-old’s release was somewhat unexpected, as authorities had claimed he was involved in massive tax fraud.
